What are books like elsewhere ?
“WE LOVE BOOKS!” is an exhibition bringing together books from the four corners of the earth. Foreign designers, whether graphic artists or typographers, will be invited to show their work at Echirolles, throwing a new and fascinating light upon generally accessible publications. Unexpected, surprising, colourful and endlessly inventive, these books offer a myriad of links between the different forms of written expression all over the world. For two months, “WE LOVE BOOKS!” will provide a unique and enriching platform for the exchange of different viewpoints. The exhibition will be a rare opportunity to re-examine old beliefs and to see things from new angles - a panorama enabling us to take a kind of snapshot of books as they are today. An open selection The result of a collaboration between poster designer Michel Bouvet, graphic artists Claire Balay and Odile Chambaut - who comprise the Atelier Michel Bouvet - and writer and critic Philippe Di Folco, the books chosen for the exhibition are a reflection of many and varied sensibilities: this “graphic journey” encompasses bindings and layout, typographical invention and the relationship between text and image. A large number of different skills are employed in the production of books today: although quality is always the main consideration, it's to the people purveying these skills in other countries that the committee has turned in order to assemble as wide, as all-absorbing, as unusual and as bountiful a range of work as possible. “WE LOVE BOOKS!” is the latest in a long line of exhibitions comprising “Graphistes Autour du Monde” (2000), “East Coas t/ West Coast, Graphistes aux États-Unis” (2002), “Swinging London, Graphisme et Musique Aujourd'hui” (2004) and “9 Femmes Graphistes” (2006), staged in previous years at the “Mois du Graphisme d'Échirolles”, with the same emphasis on international talent."
